The Importance Of Media Literacy In ‘This Place Rules’
The other day I watched the 2022 HBO documentary, This Place Rules by Andrew Callaghan, and while I was watching how the 24 hour news cycle can bring out the worst unhinged qualities in people, I realized that the documentary also brought up an interesting point that wasn’t expanded on. It was how illiterate people can be when it comes to understanding main stream media.
Media Literacy?
According to Google and Wikipedia, Media Literacy is defined as:
“The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media.”
As people of all ages are exposed to a constant stream of media messages throughout various platforms such as television, and social media. Media Literacy is essential in order for people to critically analyze and understand the messages they encounter. For most people, being ‘literate’ in media messages means that you are able to tell the difference between facts, opinions, and jargon.
From being able to identify the source of a message, understand how it was created, and assess its content and context. Media Literacy tries to make sure that individuals are better equipped to make informed decisions about what messages to accept and what messages to reject.
